    How can you demonstrate the difference being made by a project, policy, or service?

    RCT HDRC, in collaboration with DECIPHer, has developed a three-part webinar series which helps you to understand, strengthen, and demonstrate the impact of your work by using evaluation tools.

    We suggest signing up for all three sessions if possible.

    Target Audience

    This course is aimed at:

    • Frontline practitioners and officers delivering services
    • Managers and team leaders involved in service design or improvement
    • Staff who write funding bids, business cases, or service reports

     

    • PART 1 – Introduction to evaluation

      Making use of evaluation is the first session. It is beginner-friendly and designed to build confidence and capability in using Impact Measurement Data to inform decision-making within the Council.


      Learn how to:

      • Understand what is meant by Impact Measurement Data
      • Recognise different types of evaluation and what they are used for
      • Identify common biases and limitations in evaluation data

      Topics covered:
      • What is evaluation and why it matters
      • What counts as Impact Measurement Data
      • Types of evaluation (process, outcome, economic / value-for-money)
      • Understanding bias, assumptions, and limitations

    • PART 2 – Planning your evaluation

      The session provides the essential groundwork needed to carry out meaningful evaluation by identifying and involving key participants and stakeholders. It introduces tools and frameworks to define the problem and context, describe your intervention, and articulate how change is expected to happen.

      This session supports participants to plan an evaluation for their own area of work and offers some protected time within the session to apply the practical tools and ask questions.

      We strongly recommend attending this session if you are interested in conducting evaluation because if you can’t describe what you are intending to do (i.e. your intervention), you cannot evaluate it!

      Learn how to:

      • Clearly define a problem within a complex system
      • Identify stakeholders for co-production of intervention and evaluation
      • Define an intervention in the context of their work
      • Explain the guiding rationale for an intervention by using programme theory
      • Describe how an intervention is expected to achieve change using Change Models

      Topics covered:

      • Problem mapping in complex systems
      • Defining interventions using TIDieR checklist
      • Programme theory and pathways of change
      • Change Models
      • Principles of co-production and participatory approaches

    • PART 3 – Doing your evaluation

      This session introduces participants to the practicalities of process and outcome evaluation, helping them understand how to assess whether an intervention has been delivered as intended and whether it has made a difference.

      Participants will learn how to frame evaluation questions, identify appropriate outcome indicators, and consider different evaluation designs. The session also emphasises how to draw on different parts of the  Evidence Pie  to answer evaluation questions and develop a well-rounded understanding of impact.

      By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to conduct and interpret evaluation in a way that supports learning, accountability, and improved decision-making.

      Learn how to:

      • Understand the purpose of process evaluation and outcome evaluation
      • Frame clear and answerable evaluation questions based on their Change Models
      • Identify appropriate outcome indicators to measure change
      • Understand different approaches to evaluation design
      • Use the Evidence Pie to draw on multiple sources of evidence when evaluating impact

      Topics covered:

      • Process evaluation (implementation, feasibility, acceptability)
      • Outcome evaluation (measuring change and impact)
      • Outcome indicators and measurement
      • Evaluation design and selecting methods
      • Using multiple types of evidence to understand impact
