This webinar, presented by Lauren Hall, a methodologist at the NIHR RSS Specialist Centre for Public Health, offers a bite-sized introduction to the most commonly used qualitative analysis methods within public health research. It explores what qualitative analysis is, why it is important, and provides practical insights into several key approaches, including Thematic Analysis, Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Framework Analysis, Discourse Analysis (with a focus on Narrative and Document Analysis), and Content Analysis. Participants will learn how qualitative analysis is applied to non-numerical data such as interviews, focus groups, and documents to understand meaning, experiences, and perspectives, and to explore the “how” and “why” behind health outcomes. The session also highlights how these methods can give voice to lived experiences, uncover barriers and enablers to health behaviours, inform service design and delivery, and add depth and context to statistical findings. Recordings, slides, and additional resources will be provided after the webinar, with further support available from the Specialist Centre for Public Health.
