Aims and Objectives
• Mental disorder – who does the Act apply to? (definition, exclusions and learning disability)
• Professional roles (approved clinician, responsible clinician, approved mental health professional, nearest relative etc)
• Civil compulsory admissions to hospital (sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 – grounds and effect)
• Community Compulsion and aftercare (sections 7, 17 and 17A - grounds and effect, and s117 aftercare entitlement)
• Criminal compulsion – this might be less necessary and might take too long if it is a half day. Let me know your thoughts. People who deal with mental disordered offenders usually attend separate social supervision training.
• Compulsory treatment for mental disorder (in hospital and in the community)
• Discharge and rights of appeal against a detention section
• Warrants and police powers (ss135 and 136)
• For hospital based staff it might be helpful to include something on hospital managers responsibilities.
