• Aims and Objectives

    •         Mental disorder – who does the Act apply to? (definition, exclusions and learning disability)

    •         Professional roles (approved clinician, responsible clinician, approved mental health professional, nearest relative etc)

    •         Civil compulsory admissions to hospital (sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 – grounds and effect)

    •         Community Compulsion and aftercare (sections 7, 17 and 17A - grounds and effect, and s117 aftercare entitlement)

    •         Criminal compulsion – this might be less necessary and might take too long if it is a half day. Let me know your thoughts. People who deal with mental disordered offenders usually attend separate social supervision training.

    •         Compulsory treatment for mental disorder (in hospital and in the community)

    •         Discharge and rights of appeal against a detention section

    •         Warrants and police powers (ss135 and 136)

    •         For hospital based staff it might be helpful to include something on hospital managers responsibilities.
