    Social Workers and Care & Support Practitioners in RCT and Social Workers and Assessment and Reviewing Officers in Merthyr;. Staff with Supervisory responsibility for care managers;  Staff with clinical responsibilities in allied roles

    AIMS

    On this intermediate level course participants will:

    • Consider applicable skills for the assessment of mental capacity
    • Consider Principle Two of the Mental Capacity Act: keeping the focus on the person's wishes and opportunities for supported decision making
    • Consider Best Interests and the allocation of scare resources and defensible practice under the SSWB Act
    • Learn about interagency guidance on Best Interests Meetings and the management of complex cases
    • Gain insight into applications to the Court of Protection

    Learning techniques will include discussion of recent case law, viewing of video presentations of assessment interviews and group exercises

    NB: Participants must have attended a "Basic" level course or be otherwise familiar with the main provisions of the MCA.

    Participants must be available to attend both half day sessions of this one day course

    Having attended this course, candidates would be prepared to attend sessions on specialist topics within MCA practice

    Objectives

    By the end of the course participants will:

    • Have been advised of standard effective practice in undertaking and recording assessments of mental capacity
    • Reflected with peers about this challenging area of practice
    • Be aware of the local policy about Best Interests meetings
    • Be aware of procedures for escalating complex cases within organisations
    • Be aware of the need to apply to the Court of Protection and be aware of basic procedures
    • Be prepared for further learning on advanced courses
